What is 100 for 100?

Cancer Support Community Central Texas helps treat the emotional impact of cancer for patients and their families. We want 100 doctors each to donate $1,000 over the next 100 days in order to open our doors.

We will host our support programs and provide a safe, healing environment where patients and families can find hope and solace in a unique environment all under one roof.

What services will be provided?

The programs we will offer include:
  • Educational Workshops on topics such as Coping with Lung Cancer, Managing the Cost of Cancer Care, and Controlling the Side Effects of Treatment.
  • Cancer Transitions: Moving Beyond Treatment, a six-week workshop to help cancer survivors successfully transition from active treatment to post-treatment care.
  • Creative Expression & Stress Management including art, music, dance, photography, journaling, and scrapbooking for adult cancer patients and survivors.
  • Healthy Lifestyle Programs such as yoga, Tai Chi, and guided imagery; and programs to learn about food, nutrition, lifestyle choices, and how to manage living with cancer for cancer patients, survivors, family members, and friends.
  • Support Groups designated for people diagnosed with cancer and their family and caregivers.

"As a doctor myself, I know that the mental state of my patients makes a big difference in their compliance and success with medical treatment. I would love to have a place for cancer fighters and survivors to meet and benefit from each other’s journeys."- Dr. E. Schottman, FCOVD

Research has proven the importance of psychosocial support

Research conducted with the national Cancer Support Community programs shows that people who participate in support groups report significant benefits, including:

  • Decreases in depression
  • Increased zest for life
  • A new attitude toward their illness

In fact, the 2007 Institute of Medicine report “Cancer Care for the Whole Patient: Meeting Psychosocial Health Needs” states, “Today it is not possible to deliver good, quality cancer care without addressing patients’ psychosocial health needs.”
